What is the cannon bard theory of emotion? The Cannon-Bard Theory states that there are two ways to experience and express emotion—through our sensory-motor system (expressing emotions physically through movement) and through our cognitive system (expressing emotions through conscious thought). This theory, introduced in 1927 by American psychologist Walter Cannon, has since been expanded upon and remains one of the dominant theories of emotion today. In the early 1950s, American psychologists William Cannon and Philip Bard proposed a theory that emotions are a result of brain processes. This theory was coined Cannon-Bard because it combined their names. The theory postulates that when an event occurs, there is an emotional response (fear, anger, sadness) that is generated in the limbic system (emotional center) of the brain. This reaction is relayed to the cerebral cortex where it can be processed cognitively. Simultaneously, different areas of the cerebral cortex are activated depending on which emotion was produced. For example, if you were to see someone drop a glass while they were drinking from it, your brain would register this as both a physical stimulus and an emotional stimulus.

Emotions are a natural response to a stimulus. The stimulus can be physical or emotional. When the stimulus is an emotional event, people typically experience two types of emotions: primary and secondary emotions. Primary emotions are those that were present at the time of the event, while secondary emotions are those that have been developed over time as a result of thoughts about the event. In other words, we can’t understand others’ emotions without being able to identify our own feelings.

How do the brain and body work together in the emotion process?

In order to understand emotions fully, it is necessary to understand the two-part process that contributes to them. The first step is bodily arousal; the second part is our interpretation of what caused the arousal in the first place.

To put it more simply, an emotion (pleasant or unpleasant) is a reaction that occurs after our brain experiences some type of arousal in response to an event.

Is there evidence that supports these theories?

One of the most famous theories that is discussed in psychology, sociology, and philosophy is the theory of emotions. The theory was first developed by William James in 1884, who also popularized the idea that emotions are essential for humans to be able to respond quickly to stimuli. However, James’s theory was based on his belief that there were only four basic emotions which could lead to other feelings. These four basic emotions are anger, fear, happiness, and sadness. He believed that if someone felt these types of emotions then they would automatically know how to react appropriately because these feelings are instinctive responses.
